Malacology
Malacology is the study of mollusks. This includes animals like octopus, snails, slugs, and clams. It is the second largest phylum of animals, making them one of the most successful groups on the planet. There are over 80,000 described species of mollusks with many more left to be discovered. Mullusca is composed of 8 recognized classes including Cephalopoda, Gastropoda, Polyplacophora, Scaphapoda, Monoplacophorans, the Aplacophorans, Caudofoveata and Solenogastres, and Bivalvia.

Etymology
Original Description:
Animal. Greyish-brown or blackish above, paler on ther posterior extremity and base; superior tentaculae black, long and slender; glands very prominent, length, when fully extended, including the tentaculae, equal to thrice the breadth of the shell.
Shell. Convex, somewhat ventricose: epidermis, of a uniform yellowish horn or russet-color: whorls, between five and six, with fine, parrallel striae crossing them obliquely: body whorl large and ventricose: suture, well marked, and distinct: aperture, rounded, contracted by the lip, the plane of the aperture making a considerable angle with the plane of the base; lip white, reflected: pillar lip, with a priminent, white, oblique tooth: umbilicus covered.
Greatest transverse diameter about one inch.
Geographica Distribution. Common in the States bordering on the Ohio river, and in the western parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania. I have never noticed it in New England nor in the States east of the Alleghany mountains.
